Hare (Haasje)
1998

Earthenware
5 x 15 x 10 in.
Gift of Richard W. Gold from the Arthur J. Williams Collection
2024.12.53

With its skin texture marked by small circular indentations, giving it a perforated appearance, Hare (Haasje) exudes strangeness. Carolein Smit’s fertile imagination gives rise to many such creatures that combine unsettling elements. Her work treads a fine line between attraction and repulsion, exploring this delicate relationship through meticulous details, colors, and decorative elements. The resulting hyperrealism suggests the monstrous and surreal.

Born in Amersfoort, Netherlands, in 1960, Smit studied at the Academy of Art and Design St. Joost in Breda, Portugal from 1979 to 1984 and the European Ceramics Work Centre in Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands. She has received numerous scholarships and awards in the Netherlands. She currently lives and works in Zussen, Belgium.
