This small bowl, crafted from colored porcelain using the Japanese nerikomi technique, features a swirling blue-and-white pattern created by laminating colored clays together and then altering them. Thomas Hoadley has long explored the of depth perception and pattern variety that this technique allows, making them a signature of his work. As the artist explains, he views his patterns as “a collaboration between [his] imposed structure and the clay’s wise alteration of that structure.”

Born in North Adams, Massachusetts, in 1949, Hoadley studied painting and sculpture, earning a B.A. from Amherst College in 1971 and a Master of Science in Ceramics from Illinois State University in 1977. He apprenticed with sculptor and ceramic artist Malcolm Wright in 1974. His artistic practice spans ceramics and painting.
