Thom Bohnert’s art has been described as “drawings in space.” His ceramic sculptures are compositions of wire armatures and clay fragments with colorful multi-glazed surfaces creating unique volumes and spacial solutions. His assemblages have no utilitarian function. In the late 80s he began a series of large sculptures titled Trois Cirques, which reference the concept of three rings. The Girl with Flaxen Hair (1974) is a miniature pre-cursor to these.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, now of Flushing, Michigan, Bohnert received a BAA from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art as a student of Richard DeVore. As an educator, he has been a Professor of Art, visiting artist, lecturer, and conducted workshops both in the U.S. and abroad. It has been stated, "His work is everything ceramics is not supposed to be, but everything ceramics is about."
