Both a color study and an exercise in spatial organization, Coreen Mary Spellman’s Geometrie is an experiment in Modernist abstraction by an artist best remembered for her realist depictions of rural America. Spellman was born into an upper- middle class Irish-American home in North Texas. Aided by her family’s enthusiastic support, she pursued her artistic studies at premier universities and art schools including Columbia, Harvard, and the Art Students League in New York City. She was a highly-skilled and prolific printmaker and a founding member of the Texas-based Printmaker’s Guild, originally an all-woman group. Spellman taught at the Texas State College for Women in Denton (now Texas Woman's University) from 1929 to 1974.
