Bailey’s Big Foot combines satire and storytelling with skilled craftsmanship to create a work that is both sculpture and performance. To complement his skeleton, Bailey created an elaborate backstory that included posters, signage, Bigfoot droppings, and an archaeologist alter ego he named Dr. George Gladstone, who “discovered” the bones in his California backyard. As Dr. Gladstone, Bailey staged faux excavations and scientific exhibitions to prove the existence of the legendary hominid. In this way, Bailey’s bones of Bigfoot are not just art, but an invitation to consider how we construct truth.
