Adam Sorenson

American, b. 1976

Dejeuner
2010

Oil on linen
40.25 x 44 x 1.5 in.
Gift of Driek and Michael Zirinsky in Honor of Jane Beebe
2020.3.15

“The scenes I compose function as both utopian and eerily post-apocalyptic. Both of which can be seen metaphorically as social concerns in contemporary life. By inviting the viewer in visually. I ask them to recall where we have been, explore where we are now, and confront where we may be headed.”

By creating catalytic scenes within this work, Adam Sorenson envelopes the viewer with a sense of nostalgia and wonder, as seen in Dejeuner with its luminous forms suggesting stones, water, or trees. The setting feels both specific and ambiguous, an otherworldly landscape from another time or perhaps another planet.
