John Grade is primarily a sculptor who explores impermanence and. Clearly influenced by geological and biological forms and systems, Grade incorporates patterns from the natural world into his work. Grade’s drawings stand as individual pieces while also referencing his sculptural installations. As seen in Ground, Grade explores nuances of architecture to depict movement and flow within his work.

Using rectangular forms ranging in visual intensity and size, Ground depicts something resembling half of a tunnel with light streaming into the curve of the remaining half. Using texture, highlights and shadows, Grade creates an immersive sense of space that invites the viewer into the work.
