In his art practice, Bede Clark makes functional pottery like Pitcher as well as ceramic sculptures and works on paper. Pitcher is indicative of his pottery, which is wood-fired and glazed with earth tones. Clark made this piece with stoneware, a type of ceramic fired at high temperatures to produce a vitrified (nonporous) surface to make it food safe. In contrast, earthenware is a low-fire pottery that can only be made impervious to liquids by glazing.
