In contrast to his abstract paintings, Colescott’s etchings focused on narratives that revolved around politics, class issues, history, and race, particularly focusing on violence towards African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement. Colescott’s body of work is notable for its use of satire to comment on difficult social issues and for creating fictional stories about famous historical figures.
