Thomas Hart Benton

American
(1889–1975)

Island Hay
1945

Lithograph
12 x 16 in.
Museum Permanent Collection
1984.2182

Based in New York City and Missouri, Benton did not have direct contact with the Fletchers, but he was a dominant voice in American art of the 1920’s through the 1940’, and his insistence on regionally specific iconography helped to pave the way for the Fletchers’ success. For Calvin and Irene, this meant scenes of Utah agriculture and domestic life, while Benton vacillated between urban views of New York City and homesteading in the plains states.
