Robert “Boomer” Moore has created a body of work that highlights his playfulness, craftsmanship, animation, and personality. He has always been process oriented, with an interest in diverse materials and fabricating methods. He is well known for bulbous sandblasted pieces. More recently his work has turned to mixed-media pieces, such as Sterile, which came about after the birth of his first child, when everything had to be sterilized. The ceramic part is made from indigenous Ohio clay, and the green glass was a nonrecyclable material from Athens, Ohio, where his children were born. Repeatedly drawn to objects such as old and rusted toys, he has remarked that “sandblasting has allowed me to subtract fired layers of glaze to achieve much the same surface quality.”

Moore was born in Fargo, North Dakota. He attended Minnesota State Community and Technical College for two years, and received his BA in 1995 from Montana State University, Bozeman. He earned his MFA from Utah State University in 1999, and was studio coordinator/instructor for nine years at Ohio University in Athens. Since 2008, he has been an associate professor of art at West Virginia University in Morgantown. Moore is a fellow of the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana; Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts, Newcastle, Maine; and Red Lodge Clay Center, Red Lodge, Montana. He has presented numerous workshops at schools and institutions across the nation. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and is featured in numerous publications.
