When Kozloff returned to the United States in the late 70s, she shifted the focus of her artmaking to incorporate decorative arts and pattern design in an effort to break down the barrier between the “high arts” of painting, sculpture, and architecture, and the “lower” decorative and practical arts. Later in her career, Kozloff began a series of public art commissions, where she would integrate her signature mosaic and pattern designs with commentary on the city’s history, culture, and politics. Kozloff’s most recent body of work centers on collages of maps and globes. She combines historical and contemporary maps with political imagery to comment on the history of navigation, exploration, colonialism, and war.
