De Patta began creating photograms, a type of photograph created by placing objects of different transparencies on photosensitive paper and exposing them to light. The shapes and patterns she created in her photograms inspired the designs of her jewelry. De Patta also made photograms of her jewelry as a way to study the interactions of light with different materials.
