Composition #57

Kerns’s art was greatly influenced by a 1927 exhibition at the Portland Art Museum of the work of the Blue Four; Feininger, Jawlensky, Kandinsky, and Klee, a group of German painters. Kerns noted this favored sentence in the exhibition, “These artists, seeking to express the inner experience which is the source of all artistic creation, maintain that it is in the choice and relation of form, space, line, and color that
the visual expression of this experience is embodied.”
