Buxton’s Tea Set is a fine work of glazed porcelain decorated with delicately colored flowers on a lustrous surface. Extreme attention to detail is evident in both the surface decoration and the structure, with the painting continuing inside and on the bottom of these pieces, as well as in the folds of the porcelain. The slender shapes possess a gracefulness that also suggests an animating tension. Tea Set is an example of Buxton’s functional production, which later evolved into more sculptural and abstract forms.

Born in Logan, Utah, in 1961, Kerri Buxton studied at the University of Utah, where she majored in metalsmithing, and concentrated in ceramics, earning her BFA degree in 1985. Afterward, she worked as a professional studio artist, collaborating and sharing a studio with artist Brad Taylor. Buxton’s artworks have appeared in exhibitions in the United States as well as in Korea and Taiwan, where she has also worked as a visiting scholar and resident artist.
