Growing up in California’s Imperial Valley, Bergstrom developed a love of palm trees. Although they are now common in California, most palm trees are not endemic to the region, arriving in the 1700s as a way to decorate Spanish missions and attract settlers. Since then, palms have become synonymous with West Coast relaxation. Despite this association, palms were historically used as a construction material for weaving and roof thatching. Palms are also religiously significant, representing the sacredness of Palm Sunday for the Christian settlers of the West.
