1959

Gelatin silver print

Museum Permanent Collection

One of America’s great landscape photographers and environmentalists, Adams had already been photographing Yosemite for forty years when he took this photo. The view captures one of the Park’s most iconic peaks. Sunlight reflects on the towering granite monolith creating a connection between earth and sky and suggesting spiritual renewal. The name “El Capitan” is thought to be a loose Spanish translation of the original Miwok name for the mountain To-tock-ah-noo-lah, meaning “rock chief."
