Andrew Watson’s Bowl, made shortly after he completed his master’s degree at Utah State University, is a curious wheel-thrown vessel made of unglazed white porcelain. The large-scale piece has an exaggerated form, with a widely stretched belly that curves back to an opening at the rim. The function of such an unglazed bowl remains elusive. Perhaps this obscurity is Watson’s intention, meant to provoke the viewer to ponder the purpose of everyday objects and how we interact with them.

Born in Great Falls, Montana, in 1948, Watson is an accomplished ceramist who graduated in 1973 with a BA degree from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. His notable semiabstract style can be seen not only in his ceramic works, but in his watercolors and oil paintings as well. Watson was a ceramics teacher at Timpview High School in Provo, Utah, until he retired in 2008. He has since moved back to Fairfield, Montana. He and his wife own a studio there, where he teaches community classes and sells his work.
