Born in the tiny town of Glenwood in Sevier County, UT, Stewart studied in New York and Philadelphia before returning to his home state to teach at the University of Utah. Stewart settled in Farmington and frequently painted the rural landscapes of northern Utah. Although Cottage in the Woods does not include a specific location, Stewart often painted close to home in areas like Willard Bay and Weber Canyon.
