Gift of the Calvin Fletcher Family
1984.650
In 1928, Calvin invited Swedish-born, Kansas-based artist Birger Sandzen to Utah to participate in USAC’s visiting artists program. Sandzen returned to Logan in 1929 and 1930. A landscape artist with a special skill for painting vivid scenes, Sandzen inspired Calvin to adopt an expressionist style. Sandzen’s friendship and influence are evident in this work via Fletcher’s use of bold colors and thick brushstrokes. Sandzen’s engraving, Rocky Mountain Lake, is on display in one of the chests of drawers in the adjacent gallery.
