The bold colors and flat shapes in 4 A.M. make the work unique in Calvin’s oeuvre, as does the inclusion of the title in letters and numerals at the bottom of the image. The reduced, primary palette and graphic style are reminiscent of illustrations by Wanda Gág, an artist best known for her children’s book Millions of Cats, first published in 1928 and still in print. While Fletcher’s artistic inspiration for this new style is unknown, the work demonstrates his artistic versatility and whimsy.
