Red rock Kolob Fingers mark the entrance to the Kolob Canyons area of Zion National Park, about 40 miles northwest of the park’s primary entrance. As a faculty member at Southern Utah State College (now SUU) in Cedar City from 1961-1984, Leek became fascinated with the surrounding mountains. He reflected, “I continue to find generative inspiration in the visual forces of my environment—the arid subtle colors, the exciting textural variations, the soaring monumental forms, the dynamic thrusts and counterthrusts, the striking contrasts between sun-bleached lights and cavernous shadows.”
