An important figure in abstract expressionist ceramics, Autio is unusual in that he never abandoned the depiction of the human figure. Trained in drawing and painting from an early age, Autio skillfully applied “floating” figures, mainly nudes and horses, to his completed ceramic forms, creating tension between the contours of the piece and the outlined bodies. At the same time, the subtle blending of the structure’s shape and the figurative silhouettes unifies his pieces. In Aurora, Autio has altered the traditional form of the platter by folding over the rim to create a frame for his depiction of the mythological story of Aurora, the goddess of dawn, who races across the sky in her chariot to announce the arrival of a new day. His precise linework portrays Aurora and her horse intertwined and floating against the darkened background and rim of the platter.
