Mather is an American artist and educator born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in 1943 and currently resides in Bloomington, Indiana. In his early career, Mather worked throughout the United States as a studio potter in Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Ohio before accepting a position at Indiana University Bloomington’s School of Art, Architecture and Design. Mather employs both stoneware and porcelain to create functional and sculptural pottery that combines various construction processes and firing techniques. The resulting pieces are meant to "challenge viewers to use their imagination and reconsider the possibilities, meaning, and metaphor of common objects.”
