Spanish/American, (1914–1971)
Federico Castellon was born in Alhabia, Almeria, Spain in 1914. He was a self-taught artist and completed his first mural in high school. Castellon was known as a painter, sculptor, printmaker and an illustrator of children’s books. Despite the lack of a formal education, he taught at Teachers College, Columbia University, Pratt Institute and Queens College. His artwork has been exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. He died in 1971.
