Romare Bearden

American, (1911–1988)


Romare Bearden was born in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1911. He attended Lincoln University, Boston University, New York University, the Art Students League, and the Sorbonne in Paris. Through his artwork, he promoted African American culture. He worked as a cartoonist as well as a social worker. He founded the Harlem Cultural Council and the Black Academy of Arts. His artwork is exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He died in New York City in 1988.
