Richards Ruben was born in Los Angeles, California in 1925. He attended the Chouinard Art Institute after serving in the United States Army. Ruben taught at the Chouinard Art Institute, the Pasadena Art Museum, Pomona College, Claremont Graduate School, Cooper Union, New York University, Columbia University, and Pratt Institute. He was teaching in the summer art program of Pratt Institute when he died in Venice, Italy in 1998.
