Calvin Fletcher

American, (1882–1963)

Calvin Fletcher was a central figure in the history of Utah painting. He was a versatile artist whose work reflects the transition from pioneer roots to daring Modernism. He studied in Utah and abroad under artists like J.B. Fairbanks and famed painter Robert Henri. In 1913, Fletcher began teaching at Utah State Agricultural College (now USU), where he remained for more than four decades, influencing generations of student-artists. In his embrace of new forms of painting, he created at USU one of the most dynamic and important centers of modern art in the American West.
