American, (1894–1954)
Knud Merrild was born in Jutland, Denmark in 1894. He attended the Art and Technical School in Stege, Denmark and the Arts and Crafts School, in Copenhagen, Denmark. He is known for his abstract modernist style as well as his founding of the Avendt Kunst society which promoted a fusion of fine arts and crafts. Merrild worked as a set designer for a movie studio and as a designer for an architect in Los Angeles, California. He produced art in his spare time while he worked as a house painter. Hedied in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1956.
