American, (1914–2003)
Emerson Woeleffer was born in Chicago, Ilinoisin 1914. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. He taught at the Art Institute of Chicago, Black Mountain college in North Carolina and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. Woeleffer relocated to California in 1960 where he taught at the CaliforniaInstitute of Arts in Valencia and the Otis Art Institute. Towards the end of his career he began to suffer the effects of macular degeneration and began working with white crayons on black paper in order to better see what he was doing. He died in Los Angeles, California in 2003.
