Ynez Johnston was born in Berkeley, California in 1920. In 1941, Johnston completed a BFA at the University of California, Berkeley where she studied painting, printmaking, and sculpture. After finishing her degree, Johnston lived in Mexico for several years to study local artmaking techniques before returning to Berkeley where she received an MFA in 1947.
