American, (1860–1940)
Early in his career, James Taylor Harwood studied at the University of Deseret (later renamed The University of Utah) with George M. Ottinger and Danquart Weggeland. In the late 1880s, he traveled to Paris and studied at the Académie Julian and was later admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts. During his time in Paris, Harwood was a pupil of Léon Bonnat and Jean-Paul Laurens. Harwood returned to Salt Lake City in the early 1900s and later became head of The University of Utah's Art department although he continued to travel between his home in Salt Lake City and Paris throughout his life.
