Frederick Hammersley

American, (1919–2009)

While serving as an Army sergeant in World War II from 1942-45, Hammersley was stationed in Paris; after he was discharged in 1945, he took the opportunity to study at the École des Beaux-Arts. He also visited the studios of Picasso, Brancusi, and Cezanne. During this time, he began experimenting with abstract imagery. By the late 1940s, he had systematically reduced traditional imagery into simple, flat, colored, and patterned shapes. Upon his return to Southern California, he began teaching throughout the region, including at Pomona College in Claremont from 1953-62. While teaching there, Hammersley became acquainted with Karl Benjamin, a student at Claremont Graduate School, as well as John McLaughlin and Lorser Feitelson. In 1959, curator Jules Langsner selected Hammersley to be one of the artists in the Four Abstract Classicists exhibition.
