Elaine Coleman

American, b. 1945

Coleman worked closely with her husband Tom throughout her process. Working with clay vessels Tom would throw, Elaine developed a laborious inscribing method which produced both delicate line work, texture, and surface dimension. Her use of celadon glazes paid homage to the influence of East Asian glazes in American ceramics. Nature is often the subject of her carving and Coleman’s point of inspiration.

Elaine Coleman was trained at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon, and has been a working studio potter in Oregon and Nevada. She and her husband Tom became well-known in the Western United States through their teaching workshops and studio.
