Karen Carson was born in Corvallis, Oregon in 1943. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in painting and drawing from the University of Oregon in 1966, Carson moved to California, where she completed an MFA at the University of California, Los Angeles in 1971. In 1972, Carson began a 25-year-long teaching career, starting as a professor at California State University, Northridge before travelling and teaching at a number of other universities in California. Since retiring from teaching in 1999, Carson has split her time between Los Angeles and Big Timber, Montana, where she lives today.
