Nancy Buchanan was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1946. She was a central part of the feminist art movement in Los Angeles in the 1970s. She attended the University of California Irvine. Along with creating videos, Buchanan was a founder of art organizations, including F Space Gallery in Santa Ana, California; Grandview Galleries in Los Angeles; Double X, a feminist art collective; Close Radio; and the Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions. She also taught drawing, performance, and video art at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, University of California, Los Angeles, the University of California, San Diego, the University of Arizona, Tucson, and the California Institute of the Arts. Her artwork is exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
