American, (1947–2015)
Born in Oregon and raised on a fruit ranch in western Idaho, Shurtleff’s art is full of motifs of the Pacific Northwest landscape. Shurtleff pursued her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing and Painting at Boise State College in 1973, going on to receive her first master’s degree in Art Education at Boise State University in 1978. Shurtleff taught art at Caldwell High School while pursuing her second master’s in Modern Art History from the University of Oregon in 1988. She then accepted a teaching position in the art department of Boise State University where she taught until her retirement in 2013. Shurtleff was one of the first women to achieve the rank of professor within the Boise State art department.
