Born in Long Beach California, Hoefer started a career as a landscape architect after earning a Master of Fine Arts from the California College of Art and Craft in 1972. His work developed from architecture to viticulture (growing wine grapes) as he began building his art career. Fluent in five languages, Hoefer was an extensive traveler. Most of his travels involved researching his strong Italian heritage and capturing the beautiful simplicity of the natural world he saw. Hoefer eventually settled in Healdsburg, California, and much of his work depicts scenes from his home and surrounding land as he created soulful reproductions of the landscapes around him.
