Born in 1954 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Appleby moved to Montana and began pursuing her art education. She first attended the Philadelphia College of Art in 1971, and then received her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Montana. After graduating in 1977, Appleby began what would become a 15-year-long apprenticeship with Ojibwe, a Native American elder who taught her the art of patiently watching nature and learning to distinguish the perceptible patterns of natural life. She went on to receive a Master of Fine Arts in 1989 from the San Francisco Art Institute.
