English/American, (1905–1981)
Born in Derbyshire, England in 1905, Pamela Boden lived and worked across Europe and the United States until her death in Inverness, California in 1981. After moving to Germany at 17, Boden studied music and art in Munich before relocating to Paris in 1927, where she took life-drawing classes and experimented with sculpture. Boden was heavily influenced by the post-war art world in Paris and worked within a community of emerging Surrealists, Dadaists, and Cubists. In 1938, Boden moved to Portugal, where she displayed six sculptures at the first Surrealist show in Lisbon, titled EXPoem Esculture e Pintura, which was a key exhibition for the development of modernism in Portugal.
