American, (1868–1922)
Solon Borglum was born in Ogden, Utah in 1868. He started out as a rancher, but his brother Gutzon, who sculpted Mount Rushmore, convinced him to pursue art. Borglum took painting lessons in Omaha, trained at the Cincinnati Art Academy and went to Paris tostudy at the Académie Julian. He discovered in Paris that he would rather sculpt than paint. When he returned from Paris, he set up a studio in New York City, had his first major show in 1903, and started the School of American Sculpture in 1920, where he taught until his death in 1922.
