Jim Westergard was born in Ogden, Utah in 1939. He attended Utah State University and received a master's of fine arts degree. Westergard taught printmaking and drawing at Metropolitan State College in Denver, Colorado, Northern Illinois University, and at Red Deer College in Alberta, Canada. He retired from Red Deer College in 1999 but continues to do wood engravings at his home in Alberta.
