American, b. 1944
Joel Sternfeld was born in New York City, New York in 1944. He attended Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and earned a Bachelor of Arts. His work is centered around the conflicting, utopic and dystopic photographs depicting the American experience. Sternfeld has published several books, including American Prospects (1987) which explores the paradox of human-altered landscapes in America. He currently teaches at the Sarah Lawrence College in New York where he holds the Noble Foundation Chair in Art and Cultural History.
