American, (1925–2012)
Born in 1925 in Chicago, Benjamin enrolled at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois in 1943 before he joined the Navy during WW II. After the war, he moved to California to study English literature, history, and philosophy at the University of Redlands in Redlands, California, where he received a teaching credential in 1949. He moved to Claremont, California in 1952 and received an MA degree at Claremont Graduate School (now Claremont Graduate University) in 1960. He taught painting there and at Pomona College from 1979-1994. His artwork has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He died in Pomona, California in 2012.
