Austrian/Mexican, (1905–1959)
Wolfgang Paalen was born in Vienna, Austria in 1905. He studied under Fernand Léger for a short period of time before becoming a member of the Abstraction-Creation group which was created to counteract the influence of the Surrealist group led by André Breton. He left the group and in 1935 joined the surrealist movement and started his own counter-surrealist art-magazine the DYN. Paalen died in Taxco, Mexico in 1959.
