Joseph Nechvatalwas born in Chicago, Illinois in 1951. He studied at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Cornell University and Columbia University. He was the artist-in-residence at the Louis Pasteur Atelier in France and at the Saline Royale, Ledoux Foundation before becoming self-employed to work on his computer viruses.Nechvatal’s theory of Viractualism was created in 1999 which is a conceptual art idea that tries to create an interface between the biological and technological. Today Nechvatal is still creating computer-assisted art while residing in Paris.
