Pakistani, b. 1937
Romilla Batra studied Political Science and History, St. Bede's College, Shimla, India in 1956. Batra is known for porcelain works that are primarily hand built in press molds and inlaid with porcelain colored with oxides. Her work includes both functional and non-functional forms that represent her personal experiences with the natural environment, particularly the landscape in the Bay Area. After the first firing, the pieces are finished with a painted oxide on the exterior, partially removed with a sponge. The interiors of the pots washed with a clear glaze and, then, reduction fired. Many of the pieces are made in a series of successive works based on a single design idea.
