American, b. 1943
Mather is an American artist and educator born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, who currently resides in Bloomington, Indiana. In his early career, Mather worked as a studio potter in Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Ohio before accepting a position at Indiana University, Bloomington, in the school of art, architecture, and design. He employs both stoneware and porcelain in creating functional and sculptural pottery that combines various construction processes and firing techniques. The resulting pieces, he says, are meant to “challenge viewers to use their imagination and reconsider the possibilities, meaning, and metaphor of common objects.”
